Many of us have to sit tests or assessments during our career, and the following strategies will go a long way to helping you improve your memory and improve your scores.
How To Improve Exam Memory
- Think about the time of day when you are better at absorbing information.
Many of us are far more effective at learning and retaining information at night, whereas others are better learning first thing in the morning. Think carefully about the time of day that you are most effective at learning/retaining information and then only ever revise during that period. This will help improve exam memory.
- When will it be quiet with NO distractions?
Ask yourself the question, “When will I be able to revise without any distractions?” Again, you should only use this time to revise, to improve exam memory.
- Write down the information as this will improve exam memory retention.
Try writing down what you are learning. It is a proven fact that most people are far more likely to retain information when they write it down.
- Try to visualise what you are learning!
Many people use mind maps or they visualise what they are learning. This can be a great method of ensuring that you improve exam memory.
- Ask someone to test you at the end of your learning.
You should try and revise in short, 20-minutes sections. Once you have been revising for that length of time you can then ask someone to test you on what you have just learnt. This is more commonly known as ‘call-over’ advice.
- Use fun exercises to improve your memory.
A great way to improve exam memory is to carry out fun tests and exercises.

Take a look at the following series of words and study then for 2 minutes only. Once the two minute period is over you have two minutes to write down as many words as you can remember without referring back to the image!
