WHAT IS THE COORDINATION TEST?

  • The Hand Coordination test is basically an assessment of visual coordination.
  • The train driver test 2HAND Coordination reliably assesses the eye-to-hand and the hand-to-hand coordination of applicants.
  • The tests simulates a computer screen with a track whereby the candidate is required to move a dot on a pre-set track, using two control knobs or two joysticks.
  • The track will comprise of different sections, which make different demands on the coordination of the left and right hand.
  • The dot is to be moved from the right to the left. The layout of the track makes a comparison of the coordination performance possible for simple and more demanding tasks.

The test itself can be used in a variety of different formats and assessments, including the of aptitude of diagnostics in how an individual performs (train driver), motor capacity diagnostics, industrial and organisational psychology, traffic psychology or even sport psychology.

In order to help you prepare effectively for this stage of the selection process, our team of software experts have created a tool that simulates the coordination test for train drivers. Details of this tool, and how it will help you, are explained below:

The new Train Driver Hand Coordination Training System will provide you with ‘real-life’ practise for the actual assessment which will be conducted by the Train Operating Company

WHY THE TRAIN DRIVER TESTS NEEDED TO CHANGE

  • The official body which administers the trainee train driver selection process decided it was time to review the current train driver tests.
  • After all, the old tests had been in the same format since 1994.
  • The project that was set up to assess the old train driver tests, and to also introduce and develop the new ones was called Research Project T340 ‘Psychometric testing – a review of the train driver selection process’. The review assessed the validity of the old tests and also made recommendations for the new ones.
  • Following a comprehensive review of the entire selection process for train drivers, the Rail Safety Standards Board (RSSB) decided that a new set of assessments would now take shape of the new train driver tests for 2014 and onwards, including the coordination test.
  • They felt that there was not sufficient emphasis within the old tests to assess a candidate’s ability to concentrate for significantly long period of times with minimal physical activity.
  • Because of this, and other influencing factors, the RSSB felt that there was a significant risk that trainee train drivers would be placing themselves, the rail stock and more importantly the passengers at risk.
