MAGISTRATE SJT PRACTICE QUESTIONS
Once you understand the attributes being assessed, the next step is to practise applying them to realistic situations. Each SJT question asks you to rank four possible responses from most effective to least effective.
Example scenario: You are sitting with two other magistrates and believe that an important piece of evidence has been overlooked during deliberations. Which action would be most effective?
The strongest response would normally address the overlooked information directly and bring it back into the bench discussion. A weaker response might remain silent, rely only on the majority view or make a decision without discussing the concern with the other magistrates.
The guide contains multiple worked examples and four full practice tests so you can practise this type of judgement repeatedly before taking the real Qualifying Assessment.
HOW TO APPROACH SJT QUESTIONS
Start by reading the scenario carefully and identifying the central issue. Ask what has actually happened, what information is relevant and what responsibility you have as a magistrate in that situation.
Then read all four responses before ranking any of them. A useful method is:
- Identify the strongest response: which option deals with the main issue most effectively while remaining fair, impartial and professional?
- Identify the weakest response: which option ignores the issue, relies on assumptions, overreacts or creates a new problem?
- Compare the middle two: look at proportionality, professionalism, likely consequences and whether either answer leaves an important issue unresolved.
- Check your reasoning: make sure you have used only the information provided and have not added facts that are not in the scenario.
Remember that several responses may appear plausible. Your task is to decide which is more effective overall, not simply which one sounds decisive.
