ABOUT THE EIAT ASSESSMENT TESTS

The Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (EIAT) is a pre-employment assessment used to measure the essential skills and abilities required to succeed as an elevator constructor apprentice. It is an important part of the NEIEP and IUEC recruitment process, helping identify candidates who can learn effectively, solve practical problems and work safely in a technically demanding trade.

The assessment consists of three sections: reading comprehension, mechanical aptitude and mathematics. These sections evaluate a candidate’s ability to understand written information, apply basic mechanical principles and complete calculations involving arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages and introductory algebra.

The questions require critical thinking, logical reasoning and close attention to detail. The EIAT does not assess prior knowledge of elevator installation or maintenance; instead, it measures whether candidates have the foundational abilities needed to complete the apprenticeship successfully. Candidates must achieve a score of at least 70% to advance to the next stage of the recruitment process.

ONLINE ELEVATOR INDUSTRY APTITUDE TEST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS!

The Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (EIAT) is a comprehensive assessment designed to measure the foundational skills needed to succeed as an elevator constructor apprentice. It evaluates three principal areas: mathematics, mechanical aptitude and reading comprehension. These sections assess a candidate’s ability to perform calculations, understand written information, apply basic mechanical principles and solve practical problems accurately. The assessment helps identify candidates who can think critically, learn technical concepts and adapt to the demanding environment of the elevator industry.

What is the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test?

The Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (EIAT) is designed to measure the foundational abilities required to succeed as an elevator constructor apprentice. It forms an important part of the NEIEP and IUEC recruitment process.

The EIAT contains 100 multiple-choice questions divided into three sections:

  • Reading Comprehension: 35 questions:Assesses the ability to understand written information, identify main ideas, interpret important details and draw logical conclusions.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: 35 questions: Measures understanding of basic mechanical principles, including gears, pulleys, levers, fulcrums, hydraulics, pressure, motion and mechanical advantage.
  • Mathematics: 30 questions: Tests arithmetic, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, order of operations and introductory algebra.

Candidates may also complete a separate tool assessment covering the identification, characteristics and correct uses of common hand and power tools. The tool assessment does not form part of the main 100-question EIAT, but its results can contribute to the candidate’s interview score.

What is the purpose of the Elevator Industry Aptitude test?

The EIAT is used to identify candidates who possess the critical-thinking, mathematical, reading and mechanical-reasoning abilities needed to complete an elevator constructor apprenticeship successfully.

It is not intended to assess previous knowledge of elevator installation, repair or maintenance. Instead, it evaluates whether candidates have the underlying aptitude needed to learn technical concepts, follow written instructions, solve practical problems and work effectively in a demanding trade environment.

The EIAT is scored on a pass-or-fail basis. Candidates must achieve a score of at least 70% to advance to the interview stage of the recruitment process.

What is the best way to prepare for the EIAT?

One of the most effective ways to prepare is to practise realistic questions under timed conditions. This will familiarise you with the assessment format while helping you improve your accuracy, speed and confidence.

STEP 1: Review examples of reading comprehension, mathematics and mechanical aptitude questions. Learn how each type of question is presented and make sure you understand what it is asking you to do.

STEP 2: Practise questions regularly in the weeks leading up to your assessment. Short, frequent study sessions are generally more effective than attempting to learn everything immediately before the test. Concentrate additional practice on topics you find difficult.

STEP 3: ThComplete full sections under strict timed conditions. Work through multiple-choice questions without interruptions and practise performing mathematical calculations manually. Timed practice will help you develop a steady pace, manage pressure and avoid spending too long on a single question.

ELEVATOR INDUSTRY APTITUDE TEST QUESTIONS (EXAMPLES)

EXAMPLE VERBAL REASONING TEST QUESTION #1

Q1. Personal protective equipment only works when it fits correctly and is worn properly. A hard hat that is too loose can fall off at a critical moment, and gloves that are too large can catch in moving machinery. Workers should inspect and adjust their PPE before starting each task.

A. Only hard hats and gloves require fitting

B. Employers must buy the most expensive PPE.

C. PPE is uncomfortable and should be avoided.

D. PPE must fit correctly and be checked before each task to be effective.

Answer: D, PPE must fit correctly and be checked before each task to be effective.

Explanation: The passage argues that fit and pre-task checks determine whether PPE actually protects the wearer. It does not claim PPE is unnecessary, is limited to two items, or must be expensive.

Q2. An employee who consistently arrives on time and completes tasks reliably demonstrates ______.

A. creativity

B. dependability

C. flexibility

D. authority

Answer: B, dependability

Explanation: Dependability is the quality of being trustworthy and reliable. Arriving on time and completing tasks consistently are hallmarks of a dependable worker, not flexibility, creativity, or authority.

Q3. Two identical springs support a load side by side (in parallel). Compared to a single spring, each spring carries:

A. double the load

B. the full load

C. half the load

D. none of the load

Answer: C, half the load

Explanation: In a parallel arrangement the load is shared equally between the two springs, so each carries half the weight that a single spring would carry alone.

Q4. A forklift carrying a heavy load on its forks becomes unstable when the load is raised very high. Why?

A. Raising the load raises the centre of gravity, making the forklift easier to tip

B. The forks bend

C. The load gets heavier when raised

D. The engine works harder

Answer: A, Raising the load raises the centre of gravity, making the forklift easier to tip

Explanation: Raising the load raises the combined centre of gravity. A higher centre of gravity makes the forklift less stable and more likely to tip forward or sideways.

Q5. A job requires 18 bolts per panel and there are 25 panels. How many bolts are needed in total?

A. 360

B. 380

C. 450

D. 430

Answer: C, 450

Explanation: 18 × 25 = 18 × 20 + 18 × 5 = 360 + 90 = 450 bolts.

Q6. A worker earns $22/hr and works 8 hours on Monday and 6 hours on Tuesday. What is the total pay for both days?

A. $264

B. $308

C. $176

D. $172

Answer: B $308

Explanation: Total hours = 8 + 6 = 14. Total pay = 14 × $22 = $308.
