What do the Big 4 do?

The Big 4 are professional services companies with their roots founded in accounting. One of the reasons why the Big 4 have been so successful is because of the incredibly talented and driven people they employ.

This has been pivotal to the success of the Big 4 as global leaders within their field. To have any chance of success of passing the selection process with any of the big 4, you must be able to demonstrate the same values and behaviours as you will be assessed against these during the selection process. HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE BIG 4 JOBS SELECTION PROCESS

Of course, reading and memorising the Big 4 Values is a completely appropriate method to prepare for any of the Big 4’s selection process.

However, practising answering exam questions that concentrate on the Big 4’s Values may be a better option. If you practise a lot of exam questions, the values will ultimately become second nature. This will come in handy when you go in for your interview and take Big 4 aptitude workplace assessments.

Let’s look at some sample assessment test questions that focus on the Big 4’s Values.

EXAMPLE QUESTION #1 (INTEGRITY)

You work for a large professional services corporation. You are at home one weekend when you receive a package, containing several gifts of varying value. When you look to see who the package is from, you see it is from a supplier who has recently quoted to provide services to your company. Your company has a strict policy against accepting gifts. How do you handle this situation?

A. Contact the supplier, and although you appreciate the offer, you are unable to accept the gift as this goes against company policy. You return the package.

B. Contact the supplier and say you are unable to accept the package due to your organization’s gift policy. Ask them instead to donate money to a charity close to your heart.

C. Keep the package. As this was addressed to your home, this has nothing to do with your organization. Plus, it is the weekend you are not at work.

D. Telephone the supplier and accuse them of trying to bribe you. Tell them you won’t accept the package and because of this you will reject their quotation.

ANSWER = A

Option A is the best answer as this demonstrates integrity and professionalism. Your company policy states that you are unable to accept gifts, so you should take action to return the package. B, is not suitable as although you are returning the gift, by asking them to make a donation to a charity could be perceived as being unethical and should be avoided. C isn’t a good choice either as regardless of where this was sent, it would be unethical to accept the package as the sender is work related. D is a poor and unnecessary response and shows a lack of professionalism.

You have noticed that a work colleague has started falling behind on their task for a team project. Other colleagues are becoming impatient and have threatened to inform the team manager about the issue. The work colleague usually performs to a high standard. How would you handle the situation?

A. Approach the work colleague and tell them their performance is unacceptable and they need to improve immediately for the sake of the team and project.

B. Approach your work colleague in private and ask if they are having any issues which could be affecting their performance. Offer them help and support if required to get them back on track. Explain that everyone needs to pull together for the sake of the team and complete their tasks on time and to the required standard.

C. Inform your manager of the issue and let them deal with it. You are not paid to speak to your work colleague about their performance and it’s not your place.

D. Work extra hours to complete your own work and then help out your colleague until they get back to their usual high standards.

ANSWER = B

B is the correct answer. This demonstrates the values ‘Care’, ‘Work Together, Support and Excellence’. By seeing the decrease in performance, you recognise that there may be an underlying issue and you have therefore offered your assistance to get your colleague back to their best. Options A and C are not suitable and would only make matters worse. Option D, is not feasible. Although this could work short-term, this would undoubtedly affect the quality of your own work.

You are part of a project team and are attending a meeting. During the meeting you have been making a number suggestions which your manager immediately dismisses, without giving any thought to them. How do you react?

A. Stand up and tell your manager. “If you aren’t going to listen to me, I might as well go”. Walk out of the meeting.

B. Stop communicating your ideas and just listen in the meeting.

C. Interrupt your manager in the meeting and ask them why they are dismissing your ideas without giving them any thought.

D. Wait until the end of the meeting and approach your manager and tell them of your concerns and ask why they are dismissing your concerns.

ANSWER = D

D is the correct answer. This demonstrates part of the value Act with Integrity and Speak Up for What is Right. The manager is not demonstrating the values of ‘Work Together’ and ‘Care’. The manager is not valuing your contribution or recognising your ideas and this needs to be addressed in a professional manner.
