APPLYING TO BECOME A RESIDENT OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

In order to become a citizen of the United Kingdom, you’ll need the following:

• You must be able to speak and read in English;
• You must have a good understanding of living in the UK, and what this requires;
• You must be able to pass the Life in the UK Test.

In order to become a British citizen, you will need to provide good evidence that you have speaking and listening skills in English at B1 of the European Framework of Reference. There are a wide variety of tests that you can take and these tests vary in whether they test speaking and listening skills only, or combine this with reading and writing tests.

THE LIFE IN THE UK TEST PASS MARK

The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based assessment. Passing the test is one of the requirements for anyone who is seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain in the United Kingdom, or seeking naturalisation as a British citizen.

You won’t need to take the test if you are under the age of 18, or over the age of 65. Once you have passed, you won’t need to take the test again. The test will assess you on your knowledge of Britain’s past and present. While you won’t need to remember dates of birth or death, you will need to have a strong historical understanding of Britain in order to pass.

The Life in the UK Test has 24 multiple-choice questions, and lasts for 45 minutes. The questions are chosen at random, and in order to pass, you need to achieve a mark of at least 75%. So that means, out of 24 questions, you will need to get at least 18 correct. The test is taken in English, although special arrangements can be made for anyone who would prefer to take the test in Welsh or in Scottish Gaelic.

You can find out more essential details about the exam, with our Life In the UK Test Book.

BRITISH HISTORY

The British History section covers the key people, events and periods that have shaped the United Kingdom. You will learn about early Britain, the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, the Norman Conquest, medieval Britain, the Tudors and Stuarts, the Industrial Revolution, the two World Wars and modern Britain. It also includes important monarchs, political changes, inventions and achievements.

GOVERNMENT AND LAW

The Government and Law section explains how the United Kingdom is governed and how its legal system works. It covers Parliament, the House of Commons, the House of Lords, elections, political parties and the role of the Prime Minister and the monarch. You will also learn about your legal rights and responsibilities, the police, courts, jury service and the different governments within the UK.

UK SOCIETY

The UK Society section covers British customs, traditions, religions, festivals, sport, arts and everyday life. It includes important national celebrations, patron saints, public holidays, famous writers, musicians and sporting events. You will also learn about education, healthcare, employment, volunteering and the values and responsibilities shared by people living in the United Kingdom.

TRADITIONS OF THE UK

The UK Traditions section covers the customs, celebrations and events that are important in British life. You will learn about Christmas, Easter, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day and the patron saints’ days of the four UK countries. It also includes traditional food, national symbols, religious festivals, public holidays and well-known events such as the Edinburgh Festival and the Chelsea Flower Show. Understanding these traditions will help you learn how people across the UK celebrate their history, culture and communities.

MOCK TESTS

The Mock Tests bring together questions from British History, Government and Law, UK Society and Geography. Each test contains 24 multiple-choice questions, matching the number of questions in the official Life in the UK Test. They allow you to check your knowledge, practise working within the time limit and identify the subjects that need more revision before taking the real test.
