What is the Detective Constable Briefing Exercise

This exercise is designed to reflect the kind of judgement, decision-making, and communication skills you would be expected to demonstrate as a future Detective Constable. You will usually be given a range of documents, updates, statements, and case material, and you will need to review the information carefully, identify the key issues, decide what requires immediate attention, and prepare then give a clear briefing for your superior outlining your assessment and proposed actions.

The Briefing Exercise is not simply testing how quickly you can read or how much information you can repeat. It is assessing whether you can assess information in a calm, structured, and professional manner when faced with several competing demands, and then communicate that assessment clearly and logically. In practice, this means showing that you can identify risk, recognise vulnerability, prioritise enquiries effectively, and explain what should be dealt with first and why.

It also assesses the qualities that are essential in detective work. You need to show clear judgement, strong critical thinking, effective prioritisation, and an awareness of safeguarding concerns that may not be obvious at first. You may need to decide whether there is an immediate risk to a victim, whether lines of enquiry need progressing quickly to protect evidence, whether offences may be linked to a wider pattern of behaviour, or whether the matter requires escalation and specialist support. Your briefing should help your superior quickly understand the situation, the risks involved, and the action you believe should be taken.
