FAST REACTION AND COORDINATION TEST FOR TRAINEE TRAIN DRIVERS

The Train Driver Fast Reaction & Coordination Testing tool CD

During the Trainee Train Driver selection process candidates are required to undertake a series of tests, one of which is entitled the Fast Reaction and Coordination test.

The test is utilised in order to assess a potential train driver’s ability to concentrate intently whilst reacting to certain ‘timed’ events that are presented to him/her.

The test is one of the hardest to prepare for, simply because the test is so unpredictable and there are also very limited resources out there that a candidate can use pre-assessment.

the test explained

At the start of the Fast Reaction and Coordination test the candidate will be handed a set of headphones and foot pedals which will be used in conjunction with a computer keyboard and a standard computer screen like the one below:

  • The test will commence and you will be presented with up to five flashing different colours on the screen.
  • As you see each colour appear it is up to you to press the appropriate button on the keyboard as soon as possible after the colour appears.
  • At the same time you will also hear either high or low pitched noises in your headphones.
  • When you hear each one you must again press the appropriate button on the keyboard which is usually labelled either HI or Lo.
  • Then, to make the test even harder you will occasionally see yellow squares appear in either the bottom left hand corner of the screen or the bottom right hand corner of the scree, like the image below.
  • You will need to press the appropriate foot pedal soon after the yellow squares appear.

You will notice that the 2nd, 4th, 7th and 9th boxes each contain 4 dots. If you were taking the paper and pencil based version of the test, you would mark the boxes that contain 4 dots as follows:

HERE ARE SOME GOOD PREPARATION TIPS FOR TAKING THE FAST REACTION AND COORDINATION TEST:

During your preparation for the test you should try out different tests that will increase your ability to concentrate and react – the BOP IT, which is available from amazon and all other good retailers, is a good tool for improving hand coordination speed.

We also recommend that you eat and drink healthily in the build-up to the test. Avoid any alcohol for a few weeks before and you will be amazed at how much your concentration levels will improve.

During the test do not panic when you ‘fall-off’ the pace of the test. The test is so design to make you fall off. What is important is how you compose your self and start again.

Many people ask us what the score of the test is. The simple answer is that we do not know. The only people who know the score are the Train Operating Company themselves. Do not concern yourself with the pass rate; instead, concentrate on your speed and accuracy.
