A HGV lorry driver’s duties are to transport goods for various clients to any given location either in the UK or overseas in mainland Europe. The role requires that you deliver goods to an agreed schedule and assist with unloading of the goods in a safe and timely manner at the client’s premises. HGV drivers are also responsible for maintaining the vehicle whilst this is in their control to ensure the vehicle is road-worthy and capable of delivering its cargo. You must also be safety conscious and be able to follow strict rules and procedures. Planning also plays a big part of the role, and it is your duty to plan the deliveries in the most cost-efficient manner as possible, especially if the role is a multi-drop HGV role.
A HGV driver’s main duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Ensure the vehicle under your control is legally road-worthy and mechanically sound.
- Check to ensure that all goods have been loaded correctly and are secured for transport.
- Planning of the most efficient route to the delivery destination.
- Ensure you are up to date with any road closures, road works or other diversions or incidents which may delay your journey.
- Planning of multi-drop deliveries to the most cost-efficient routes.
- Assist with the safe loading and unloading of goods from the vehicle.
- Updating vehicle log books and any legal documents which track milage etc.
- Comply with any legal requirements such as maximum driving time in a 24-hour period.
- Comply with any organisation specific policies and procedures.
Heavy Goods Vehicle Driver Key Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in your application to become a HGV driver, you will be required to have a certain number of qualifications plus be able to demonstrate some key skills to ensure you are able to perform the duties in a safe and efficient manner, please see these listed below:

- A basic understanding of the mechanical maintenance of the vehicle.
