I have a proven track record of working alone and as part of a team with excellent communication and people skills. I am confident on the telephone and can communicate with clarity to both patients and medical staff.

Outside of work I am driven by my family who are fully supportive of my career and the potential shift work that comes with the job. I enjoy hobbies such as going to the gym where I can maintain healthy fitness and concentration levels.

To be effective as a Medical Secretary, you need exceptional organisation and planning skills. If you don’t, you will make mistakes, and this will impact on the service that is provided to patients. You need accurate and concise communication skills; be good with IT and all the different Microsoft applications, and you must have strong customer service skills. Being able to deal with patients in line with the medical institution values and the patient service charter is vital. You must be confident in your abilities and demonstrate composure and empathy whilst speaking to patients. You need to work well as part of a team. You have to follow rules and procedures, maintain confidentiality and use your initiative to solve problems as and when they occur.

I spent a considerable amount of time researching both the job description and the values of your institution before applying, to ensure I have the skills and qualities required to perform the role well and uphold the standards of service and patient care you successfully provide.

As well as having experience of working as part of team, I can be relied upon to work on my own, unsupervised. I possess a confident telephone manner; I am able to work with everyone, and I will always follow instructions clearly. I have excellent communication and people skills and will be able communicate effectively with both in-patients, out-patients, medical staff, doctors, nurses and also external stakeholders and suppliers. Medical Secretary Job description and key skills


Medical secretaries are pivotal part of the efficient day to day running of a medical/GP practice, department or medical office. They provide administrative and other support to the clinical staff within the organisation. A Medical Secretary must be a driven and highly organised individual, whom is able to multi-task and be able to work under pressure and have excellent customer service and communication skills. Dealing with patients on a daily basis, a candidate must be able to show empathy and adjust communication to the needs of the individual and show high levels of integrity and confidentiality.

Medical Secretary Key Tasks

  • Scheduling the patient appointments for each day.
  • Maintain patient records, ensuring confidentiality is retained at all times.
  • Typing letters and reports.
  • Update databases and spreadsheets.
  • Organising meetings and minutes taking.
  • Travel arrangements for clinical staff.
  • Dealing with all written communication; post and email.
  • Ordering Office supplies and equipment upon request of the clinical staff.
