Q1. Tell me about yourself and your experience as a psychiatric nurse.

Certainly. I am a compassionate registered nurse with experience supporting adults who are living with a range of mental health conditions. In my current role, I complete patient assessments, give medication safely, observe changes in presentation, update care plans and work closely with doctors, psychologists, support workers and families. I also spend a great deal of time listening to patients, because a calm conversation can reveal concerns that may not appear in written notes.

One of my strongest qualities is that I stay composed when a ward becomes busy or a patient is distressed. For example, I once supported a patient who became frightened and angry after receiving difficult news. I gave them space, spoke in a quiet voice and asked what would help them feel safer. Once they were calmer, I explained the available choices and involved the wider team. The situation settled without anyone being harmed, and the patient later agreed to continue with their care.

Colleagues would describe me as dependable, respectful and observant. I take accurate records seriously, report concerns promptly and always protect patient dignity. I also review my practice and ask for guidance when I need it.

The main reason I chose psychiatric nursing is that good care can help someone regain safety, confidence and control at a very difficult point in life. I value the chance to understand the whole person, including their symptoms, physical health, relationships, culture and personal goals. That kind of nursing suits me because I am patient, curious and comfortable taking time to listen.

During one of my early placements, I cared for a patient who had stopped speaking with staff and was refusing most activities. I introduced myself each day, kept my promises and offered simple choices without applying pressure. Gradually, the patient began to talk about what was worrying them. That experience showed me how trust can grow through small, consistent actions. It also confirmed that this was the area of nursing where I could make my strongest contribution.

I want this position because I am seeking a team that takes safety, dignity and recovery seriously. From what I understand, your service values respectful care and close teamwork.
