Q1. What are your strengths as a scrum master?

SUGGESTED ANSWER:

“One of my strengths as a scrum master is that I am able to effectively manage conflicts within a team. I am aware that adopting an agile way of working can be a big change for some people, and to me, an agile way of working is partly about creating an environment where everyone is comfortable not working in silence, but instead, they are encouraged to provide feedback, they respond well to feedback, and they encourage feedback from others. I therefore, feel one of my strengths is making sure all team members feel heard, and if a conflict or discord ever arises, I follow a 5-step process where I start by ensuring I understand the issue, I arrange a discussion — usually in the daily scrum discussions — and we would then explore different ways the team could resolve the issue, assign a resolution, and then check back regularly to ensure everyone was happy, and the resolution worked. My other strengths include, my facilitation of agile processes and scrum ceremonies (e.g. sprint planning, daily stand-up, sprint retrospective, and so on.) to ensure efficient and productive teamwork. I also have strong communication and leadership abilities to guide the team toward project success and promote teamwork and collaboration in a positive environment. And finally, I would say another important strength I possess is my ability to adapt and be flexible in response to changing project requirements and team dynamics.”

“There is one instance that comes to mind where I did fail in my role as a scrum master. Early on in my career, I was placed in charge of helping a new team adopt an agile way of working. I had developed an excellent scrum framework for the company and the team was really positive about adopting an agile method. However, I found myself with a shortage of people with the right skillsets. This happened as I wrongly accounted for skills in my plan that the team did not currently have, but I was told HR had already interviewed for these roles, and two new members of staff were to be joining the team soon. However, when these members of staff joined, it was quickly clear that their skillsets were not a match for the vision I had for them. This was my error, as I didn’t reach out to these members of staff before they joined the team to access their best strengths, and I went with what other people told me instead, whom obviously would not know the details of the framework and project ahead. I managed to quickly fix this issue, by learning what their actual strengths were and adjusting the plan accordingly. However, I was embarrassed by my mistake, and I learned a great deal from this experience. Moving forward, I have since found that the best way to avoid a shortage of people and skill sets is to work closely with HR. I do this by having meetings with them when they are recruiting, to ensure that I can provide them with as much detail about the experience and skills needed, and also any certifications that we need. I have found this to be highly effective in enabling HR to create recruitment campaigns that meet our needs.”

SCRUM MASTER JOB DESCRIPTION


A scrum master’s job is to keep the team on track with the principles and practises established at the beginning of the project.
