WHAT IS THE WONDERLIC TEST?

The Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT) is an aptitude test to assess your ability to understand information, think critically and solve problems.

The Wonderlic test consists of 50 questions from various categories, and your task is to answer as many questions as possible with accuracy and utilising quick thinking. With only 15 minutes to complete the test, very rarely will candidates make it to the end. This test is used by many employers around the United States and Europe as a of sifting applicants during the early stages of the selection process.

For the best chance of success, you will need to practice lots and play to your strengths. If your verbal ability is stronger than your maths or spatial skills, focus your best efforts on these questions. You can go back to any questions if you have time available. However, if you are spending more than a minute to answer a question, you are better off taking an educated guess and moving on to the next question. Remember, you are not penalised for wrong answers.

The WONDERLIC PERSONNEL TEST, often known as WPT, include: Numerical Reasoning Tests (Maths), Verbal Reasoning Tests (English Language), Spatial Reasoning Tests (Problem Solving), and Speed tests.

Wonderlic aptitude testing is an increasingly common way for employers, such as Michelin, Duracell, Subway, U-haul, and Delta, to name a few, use the Wonderlic personnel test to evaluate potential candidates before they are recruited.

Aptitude Tests Verbal Reasoning What to Expect

Verbal Reasoning

Language/Verbal Comprehension tests are commonly used in Wonderlic assessments to test your ability in spelling, punctuation, grammar, reading and comprehension. Typically, in the test, verbal reasoning consists of 20 questions, around 40% of the overall questions.

SPEED TESTS

The speed tests, as the title suggests, are designed tone answered quickly. To answer these questions will require you to have decent general knowledge. You will be facing questions based on dates, abbreviations, time differences, and some geographical questions. This accounts for between 5-10% of the questions in the test.

Spatial Reasoning

Spatial reasoning is a type of non-verbal reasoning often separated into its own category. It is used to assess your spatial awareness and logical thinking – often depicted in questions asking you to work out how an image or shape has moved, rotated, or mirrored. Other test types will include cube nets and sequences. This part of the test makes up around 5% of the test questions in total. 

Numerical Reasoning

Numerical reasoning is one of the most popular test types and is used regularly in the WPT. This assesses candidates’ mathematical ability and will vary in difficulty depending on the role. The WPT will evaluate your capacity to comprehend and interpret numerical data presented in tables or graphs. This test consists of 20 questions divided into four sections, each with a time constraint. You can also expect other numerical-based questions such as percentages, calculation & Speed, Distance and Time.

Explanation =

First, work out how much you spent: 3 x $0.35 = $1.05 and $3.

$1.05 + $3 = $4.05

Next, the calculation to work out the percentage is a simple one:

Percentage= (Value/Total Value)×100

4.05 / 20 = 0.20

0.20 x 100 = 20

Therefore, the answer is 20%.

How Do I Prepare For The WPT?

Is the Wonderlic Personnel Test Hard?

Please also bear in mind that during the test, you will have 15 minutes to complete the 50 questions. To complete the test in full, that gives you 18 seconds per question. So accuracy, speed and attention to detail are a must. Less than 1% actually finished the test, so you must be prepared!

The short answer is it depends on what assessment and the employer’s requirements. The Wonderlic personnel tests do not have a pass or fail mark. Instead, it is up to the individual employer to set the scoring criteria based on the competencies and traits it is seeking.
