WHAT ARE THE NETWORK RAIL ASSESSMENT CENTRE TESTS?
The Network Rail Assessment tests are separated into four different categories:
The Network Rail Assessment Centre, includes: Numerical Reasoning Tests (Maths, data interpretation), Verbal Reasoning Tests, Inductive Reasoning, Situational Judgement Tests and a Match Me Quiz (personality assessment)).
Network Rail use a Verbal Reasoning test which consists of the candidate having to read a passage of text, and then answer a number of questions based on what you have read. You will have to decide if the the question is a true, false or cannot say reflection on what you have read. IMPORTANT! When answering these type of questions you must only bas your answers on what is written and NOT what you know to be fact in reality.
Non-Verbal Reasoning is a type of logical ability test, usually using shapes and patterns to make questions that test your general logical ability and intelligence. By assessing your ability to recognise abstract patterns quickly and accurately, the Network Rail Assessment tests examine your logical and analytical skills.
The Network Rail Situational Judgement Test is designed to assess candidates against the values and code of ethics of the organisation. During this test you will be presented with a workplace scenario and four possible answers. Your task is to select what you believe is the best and the worst answer.
Numerical reasoning is one of the most popular test types and Ione which is part of the Network Rail Assessment Centre. This assesses candidates’ mathematical ability. The assessment will evaluate your capacity to comprehend and interpret numerical data presented in tables or graphs. This test consists of multiple questions and will come with a strict time limit to complete.
Q. If you were to purchase 3 Bananas and 10 apples using a $20 bill, what percentage of your money will you spend?
| Item | Per Item | Pack of 10 |
| Apples | $0.27 | $2 |
| Pears | $0.40 | $3 |

| Peaches | $0.50 | $3.50 |
A. 10%
B. 20%
C. 25%
D. 15%
E. 5%
B. 20% miles
Explanation =
First, work out how much you spent: 3 x $0.35 = $1.05 and $3.
$1.05 + $3 = $4.05
Next, the calculation to work out the percentage is a simple one:
Percentage= (Value/Total Value)×100
4.05 / 20 = 0.20
0.20 x 100 = 20
Therefore, the answer is 20%.
Q. Read the below passage carefully and answer True, False, or Impossible To Say, based on the statements made.
The below passage is a statement from a local newspaper:
A leading internet provider has said that the majority of its broadband and phone bills will raise by more than 10% during the first week of June. The internet provider has blamed a “huge increase” in data usage over recent years. Customers impacted by this decision will now be paying and additional £4.50 per month (a 10.4% increase) on average from 6th June. However, certain households on specific packages, and also those who are claiming benefits, will not see an increase yet.

Your company has recently hired a new staff member. He has only been working for you for 2 days, but you have noticed him making inappropriate remarks towards female staff members. Your manager does not seem to have noticed. One of your female colleagues has confessed that his behaviour makes her feel uncomfortable, but she does not want to risk jeopardising the employee’s future, especially since he has only just joined the company. Another female staff member claims that the next time he does it, she will ‘give him a smack’. What do you do?
A. Take the new employee to one side and tell him that his behaviour needs to change.
B. Go to your manager and explain the situation.
C. Encourage your female colleagues to speak to your manager.
D. Ignore the behaviour. He’s only joking.
Explanation:
C. Encourage your female colleagues to speak to your manager.
This is very helpful as it is the right thing to do. Although you should of course take some responsibility for helping your colleagues, ultimately it is their issue to take to the manager.
A. Take the new employee to one side and tell him that his behaviour needs to change.
This is helpful. You are taking steps to try and amend the situation, without going to management straight away. By discussing it with the new employee to one side, you are not humiliating them in front of your other colleagues.
B. Go to your manager and explain the situation.
This is neither helpful nor unhelpful as the woman has already said that she does not want to jeopardise the employee’s position at the company. Therefore it is not up to you to go to management.
D. Ignore the behaviour. He’s only joking.
This is very unhelpful. Sexual harassment/inappropriateness is a serious issue.
