If your child is thinking of applying to a grammar school in the UK, then it’s likely that they will need to sit the 11+. The eleven-plus is an extremely tough, rigorous assessment, which challenges skills such as Maths, English, and more. With this in mind, your child will need loads of practice in order to ace the test and secure their spot in a grammar school!
Now, let’s find out what the exam involves and how you can help your child to pass!
Just like the the Kent Test, and other such variations, the 11+ is a means for grammar schools to assess students who are applying to them. Grammar schools take only the top percentage of students from the exams – which means that a pass alone is not always enough to secure a place at your chosen school. So, with this in mind, it’s vital that your child can score as highly as possible.
The 11+ uses four separate tests:
English. The eleven plus English examination involves a comprehension exercise – where your child will need to read a passage and then answer questions based on what they read, and a writing-based task. For example, they might be asked to write about their last holiday, or write a story about being a pirate.
Maths. The Maths test will assess your child’s ability to solve mathematical problems, including addition, subtraction, percentages, decimals, ratios, graphs and fractions.
Verbal Reasoning. This exam tests your child’s ability to understand and solve word-based problems, identifying antonyms, synonyms, and more. Learning the meanings of different words and their relationships is important for this test.
Non-Verbal Reasoning. Non-Verbal Reasoning tests your child’s ability to understand the relationship between shapes, lines and patterns, and will include questions based on elements such as symmetry, rotation and sequences.
The 11+ is deliberately difficult to revise for – most schools do not teach elements such as non-verbal reasoning – and this means that our resources will prove essential when preparing for the exam. Our downloadable practice worksheets are full of practice questions and detailed explanations – we’ll give your child the preparation that school won’t, focusing on vital areas of importance, not just in Non-Verbal reasoning but in Maths, English and Verbal too!
The 11+ English assessment is a comprehensive examination of your child’s ability to read and take in information, before answering questions based on what they’ve read. They won’t just be asked facts about the passage, but also questions regarding to narrative voice, use of language, tone and description. Our downloadable practice worksheets contain everything your child needs to pass!

Verbal reasoning examines your child’s understanding of words and their relationships. When sitting this test, they’ll face questions that test their knowledge of elements such as synonyms, antonyms, word meanings, and word relationships.
The best way to conquer verbal reasoning questions is with familiarity. The more of this question type your child does, the better they’ll get.
