A Must-Have Guide for Practising GCSE Maths

Understanding GCSEs

GCSEs are a rigorous part of secondary school education. The General Certificate of Secondary Education is an academic qualification taken by 14 to 16-year-olds (generally), to be assessed in a specific subject.

Typically, GCSE courses are chosen at the start of Year 10 (ages 14 to 15). The three core subjects Maths, English and Science, start earlier than this because there is simply too much content to be learned within 2 years.

Maths, English, and Science are compulsory subjects which have to be taken at GCSE level. Some schools may have other compulsory subjects. Students then have the option to choose to study other subjects, which will vary depending on the school that you are at. Generally, your child will be offered at least one subject from the following 'entitlement areas':

  • Arts (Art and Design, Music, Dance, Drama, Media);
  • Design and Technology;
  • Humanities (History and Geography);
  • Modern Foreign Languages.

Undertaking GCSEs are a great way to not only to further your knowledge and understanding of a specific subject, but it also helps to prepare you for your future choices after secondary school.

Most employers, colleges and universities take a huge interest in your GCSE results, usually expecting at least 5 A to C grades, with emphasis on the compulsory GCSE qualifications. You can leave secondary school with 10 or more GCSEs, which puts you in a great starting position to go on to higher education, and eventually obtain a job of your choice.

It is a common feeling amongst most students that exams are boring, stressful, and often difficult. GCSEs are usually a 2-year qualification, which will have an exam at the end of the course to assess your skills and knowledge in which you have learned throughout the course.

Therefore, when it comes to the exams, an integral part of success is having prepared for your GCSEs well in advance. That is why you need to undertake as much practice and revision as you possibly can, to ensure you achieve the best marks possible.

It may not seem like it now, but your results in your GCSEs will go a long way to deciding your future, and that is why you want to make sure that you give yourself an array of different and exciting opportunities!

So what is the key to success when studying for GCSEs? Your answer

"Preparation, Practice And Perseverance!"

Question 5

Write these numbers in order of size, starting with the smallest.
a) 56% 0.5 2⁄5

Write these numbers in order of size, starting with the largest.
b) 60% of 400 1⁄3 of 360 Half of 796

Question 1 (i) A = 6
The first column has a total of 30. The only letter in that column is A, so A is:
30 ÷ 5 (rows) = 6
(ii) B = 2
18 – 12 = 6
6 ÷ 3 = 2
(iii) C = 3
6 + 2 + 2 = 10
16 – 10 = 6
6 ÷ 2 = 3
(iv) D = 4
2 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 10
14 – 10 = 4
(v) E = 8
4 + 4 = 8
32 – 8 = 24
24 ÷ 3 = 8

Question 2
Answer = 64.5 cm²
3 x 9 = 27
9 x 5 = 45 ÷ 2 = 22.5
9 x 2 = 18 ÷ 2 = 9
3 x 4 = 12 ÷ 2 = 6
27 + 22.5 + 9 + 6 = 64.5 cm²

Question 3
Answer = 37.7
To work out the circumference of the circle:
Radius = 6 cm
Diameter = 12 cm
You will need your calculator. Push the 'Pi' symbol and multiply it by 12 (the diameter):
To three significant figures = 37.7

Question 4
Answer = 28
In each pattern, the number of matchsticks is increasing by 3 each time.

To work out the pattern, you will need to multiply the pattern number by 3 and then add 1.

To work out pattern number 9:
9 x 3 = 27 + 1 = 28

Question 5 (a) 2/5, 0.5, 56%
You need to convert these numbers so that they are either all percentages, decimals or fractions.

Let's change them all into percentages:
0.5 = 50%
2/5 = 40%

So smallest to largest = 2/5, 0.5, 56%

(b) Half of 796, 60% of 400, 1/3 of 360
60% of 400
400 ÷ 100 x 60 = 240

1/3 of 360
360 ÷ 3 = 120

Half of 796
796 ÷ 2 = 398

So largest to smallest is = half of 796, 60% of 400, 1/3 of 360
