HOW TO PASS THE TRAIN DRIVER APPLICATION FORM

1. MAKE SURE YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND THE GUIDANCE NOTES THAT ACCOMPANY THE APPLICATION FORM

  • The guidance notes are provided specifically to ‘guide’ you through the form and they inform you what you MUST do in order to pass the first stage of selection.
  • Most people fail the application form stage because they do not follow the rules that are contained within the notes.
  • You must also ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements as these form the basis of the assessment.

2. READ AND UNDERSTAND THE PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR THE ROLE

  • The person specificarion and job description are the blueprint for the role of a trainee train driver, and as such, it is important that you are able to meet each of the criteria.
  • If you fail to provide details of where you meet the criteria then you will not progress to the next stages of selection.

3. PROVIDE EVIDENCE IN THE APPLICATION FORM RESPONSES

  • Part of the form will ask you to state your skills and experience that are relevant to the role.
  • If you have read and digested the job description and person specification then you will understand why this is important.
  • You should be able to demonstrate that you have good communications skills, team working abilities, a reliable and flexible nature and also an ability to concentrate for long periods of time.

4. INCLUDE KEYWORDS AND PHRASES

We would also recommend that you try and include keywords and phrases from the person specification when answering the questions on your application form. For example, if your particular application form asks you to state the reasons why you want to become a train driver, you will increase your chances of success by including keywords and phrases such as:

  • Safety-conscious and able to follow rules and procedures.
  • Able to concentrate for long periods of time.
  • Highly flexible and willing to work unsociable hours.
  • An ability to learn and retain large amounts of job relevant information.
By using keywords and phrases in your application responses such as the ones above, you will be greatly increasing your chances of success.

SAMPLE TRAIN DRIVER APPLICATION FORM QUESTIONS

After each question we have provided you with some tips on how to answer them. The following questions have been taken from an application form with Chiltern Railways.

CAREER CHOICE & MOTIVATION

Q. Explain why you have applied for this job, and provide evidence of why you believe you are the best candidate for this job.

  • We advise that, during this response, you use genuine reasons why you have applied.
  • Most people will state that being a train driver is ‘something they have wanted to do since they were very young’.
  • This kind of response will gain few marks.
  • Try to come up with strong reasons why you want to apply to this Train Operating Company and go in to detail to state why you are the best person for the job.
  • For example, you may decide to state that you are applying because you have now gained the necessary skills and experience to carry out the role competently such as effective communication skills, great customer service abilities and an ability to learn and retain a large amount of job-specific information.
  • You may also wish to tell the assessors that you have studied the TOC in-depth and you have been impressed with their level of professionalism and dedication to delivering a first class service to their passengers.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE RELEVANT TO THE ROLE TO WHICH YOU ARE APPLYING

You may also get asked questions about your skills and experience that you have learned in other jobs and how they will be relevant to the position you are applying for. (This may include different languages you speak, customer service experiencE, ETC.)

  • Customer service
  • Communication skills and delivering difficult messages
  • Working in high pressurised environments
  • Concentrating for lengthy periods of time
  • Working unsociable hours and being flexible
  • Learning and absorbing large amounts of job-related information

You should also remember that, to score high on this question, you will need to provide DETAILS of where you have already carried out each task.

ACTIVITIES & INTEREST

Q. What activities and leisure interests are you currently involved in, and what have you learnt about yourself from your involvement in these?

(Explain how this is relevant to the role to which you are applying).

Some great activities and interests are:

  • Learning a new musical instrument – this shows that you are capable of learning large quantities of difficult and complex information over a long period of time.
  • Keeping fit and active – this shows that you look after your health which will aid your concentration levels; something which is key to your role as a trainee train driver.
