Why So Many Candidates Struggle with the Vigilance Test
Many train driver candidates underestimate the Vigilance Test because it looks simple at first glance. However, once the timer starts, the challenge becomes much harder.
You need to react quickly, and stay focused for the full duration of the test. After just a few minutes, mental fatigue can set in, and that is when mistakes usually happen.
The problem is not that candidates are incapable. The problem is that they have not trained their concentration, reaction and accuracy before test day.
HOW THE TEST WORKS
- The test is designed to assess your ability to react quickly to changes whilst performing tasks at high speed. The test will be carried out on a computer and a computer screen.
- During the test, you will be presented with a simple square which at random increments will change to a different colour.
- Your task is to press the button as quickly as possible when you see the target colour appear
- At the beginning of the test you will be informed of the target colour you are looking for so ensure you read the instruction and follow procedure.

The test requires up to seven minutes of solid focus and concentration.
THE VIGILANCE TEST LEVELS AND PROGRESS

For example, if you are getting a good score on our hard level, this is a good indication that you will probably do well in this test on your assessment day.
Easy Level: A quick 2 minute test, with longer periods between target colours and longer reaction windows. Start on this level and practice until you reach a consistent score in the high 90’s percentage, on multiple test attempts
Medium Level: This level is a 4 minute test where the changes in colour will be more rapid and the time you have to react is also reduced. This level requires sustained focus and consistent reactions.
Hard Level: The test is 7 minutes long and requires comprehensive focus, concentration and reaction skills. Colour changes will come at pace and the reaction window is further reduced.
Extreme Level: This is a five minute bonus test which is not used currently as part of the vigilance test, it will help you to master the ability to work on two tasks simultaneously which is vital in other areas of the assessment.
IMPORTANT TIPS
- It is crucial that you aim for accuracy as well as reaction.
- You will lose marks for incorrect answers; therefore, you will need to work hard on improving your concentration levels.
- You will find that during the first couple of minutes your concentration levels will be good; however, after a few minutes it will become harder to concentrate.
