How to Join the British Army as a Foreigner or Commonwealth Citizen

Join the British Army as a Commonwealth Citizen Online Training Course

If you want to join the British Army as a Foreigner or Commonwealth Citizen, there are a few criteria that you need to know. Here, we’ll be looking at how you can be eligible to join the British Army as a Foreigner or Commonwealth Citizen in 2019.

British Army Commonwealth Criteria – Join the British Army as a Foreigner

As of November 2018, government ministers have announced plans to allow foreigners to join the British army. They can even be eligible if they haven’t lived in the UK. However, this has yet to be finalised. So, here’s what you need to know if you’re a Commonwealth citizen who wants to join the British Army as a foreigner. If you’re a Commonwealth citizen, there are limited spaces available for you in the British Army. Commonwealth citizens are eligible for the Army, and no longer need to be residents of the United Kingdom. There are two criteria that you must meet:

1. You must have permission to enter the UK. If you have some kind of travel ban which prevents you from entering the UK, then you are not eligible to join the British Army.

2. You must possess a passport that is valid for at least two years after your starting date in the Army. So, if you started work in the Army on 25th October 2019, it must be valid at least until 25th October 2021.

  2. Mano says:

Is this even for real? about the commonwealth countries being allowed to join the army without ever living in the UK because i applied and told them i held a british passport since birth but never lived in the UK and they rejected my application because of that

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Mano,

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been rejected by the army. The rules about commonwealth citizens still apply, but it might be the case that you need to fulfill extra criteria in some circumstances – the army should be able to give you some detailed information on why you’ve been rejected on this occasion.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

      • Mano says:

        This is how it went

I applied for the role of infantry,
They sent me a nationality and residency questionnaire where they ask me to fill the addresses of the places I’ve stayed at besides the UK, I email them and tell them I’ve never lived in the UK so how am I to process this application, they tell me I have to stay for 5 years in the UK before applying and have withdrawn my application. I have since then tried to contact them 2x via email but no response.
        What do I do?
I was born in Hong Kong during the British rule and that’s why I got a British passport since birth and I m aware that Hong Kong is not a commonwealth country but I also happen to hold a passport and ID card of another country which is on the commonwealth countries list.
Should I start a new application? I honestly want to join the army really badly tbh.

        • Jordan Cooke says:

          Hi Mano,

Thanks for your detailed response. Our suggestion is to contact your local Armed Forces Careers Office – they should be able to provide you with application specific tips, regarding your eligibility.

          Sincerely,

          The How2Become Team

          Hi Amusa,

Luckily, Nigeria is part of the commonwealth. Therefore, depending on your personal circumstances, you would be eligible to apply – as there are (limited) spaces available for foreign nationals in the British army =].

      • Samm says:

If you have been rejected by other armed forces, then it is unlikely that you will be accepted by the British army, but of course you are welcome to try – depending on your personal circumstances and nationality, of course.

Hello, I am 22 years old and held a Gambian passport and I just completed a BSC degree in Computer Science and Technology in China. Am I eligible to apply?

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Karl

Since Gambia is a member of the commonwealth, yes you are eligible to join. There are two criteria that you must meet:

      1. You must have permission the enter the UK.

Hopefully this helps! Best of luck.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team.

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Benny,

Since South Africa is a member of the commonwealth, yes you are eligible to join. There are two criteria that you must meet:

      1. You must have permission the enter the UK.

Hopefully this helps! Best of luck.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team.

      • James Barnes says:

Hi Jordan, I too am a South African but on the online application if I reply yes that I have no restriction to prevent me entering the UK it still won’t allow me to submit returning “candidate has not met minimum UK residency requirements”. Do you perhaps have an email address where I can communicate directly with a recruitment centre.

        • Jordan Cooke says:

          Hi James,

It does sound like you would be better off speaking to the army directly about this, as they should be able to provide person-specific advice. You can contact the Army via the following page https://www.army.mod.uk/contact-us/

          Best of luck!

          Sincerely,

          The How2Become Team

  5. Diane Mitchley says:

    Hi Jordan,

My son is SA born wanting to join the Armed Forces, I hold a UK passport, he would need to apply for the ancestral visa. Thing is when we do the application he can only get to a point where he’s asked for a visa application number etc. He’s not been to the UK yet, not done a visa application as of yet until he is able to complete the application form. Please can you shed some light on this trouble shooting or in-fact maybe we’ve missed something on the application itself. Our understanding is the visa process would only start once you’ve go feedback to attend the recruitment process. Thank you

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Diane,

It is our understanding that your son will need to obtain his visa first – before he can complete the application process. That being said, the laws on UK residency have now relaxed, so he won’t need to be a UK citizen in order to join. You can read more about the process via the Army eligibility page , or alternatively it would be a good idea to get in touch with a UK Armed Forces Careers Office – as they should be able to point you in the right direction =].

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Jovilisi,

It depends upon a variety of factors – but your nationality would not rule you out in this case, since Fiji is part of the commonwealth!

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

      • Segun Odunsi says:

    • Rajeev Nair says:

I am from India. I been in uk 9 yrs I like to join in British army I don’t have valid visa I mean visa under process this mean time can I join ? My Indian passport validity more 2 yrs existing please give me your advice

      • Jordan Cooke says:

Hi Rajeev. Based on your personal circumstances, it sounds like you would be eligible to join – having lived in the UK for 9 years and as a member of a commonwealth nation, you meet the nationality criteria. Why not apply and see how you get on? Let us know if you run into any difficulties!

        Sincerely,

        The How2Become Team

I have a valid international passport

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Mandla,

It sounds like the issue here is a technical problem with the Army website. Our advice is to get in touch with them to ascertain what the issue is here – they should be able to fix it for you, so you can move on with your application =].

      Best of luck.

      Sincerely,

    Good day

My name is Ancilla 24years of age, South African I am interested in joining the British army how do I go go about applying please?

      • Kwagh says:

Hi, please kindly confirm to me if the British residency requirements (5 years) for Commonwealth citizens who wish to join the Armed Forces have been scrapped or not. I seem to be unable to submit my application and I get an error message that “candidate has not met minimum UK residency requirement.”

        • Jacob Senior says:

          Hi Kwagh,

To our knowledge, this initiative has not been scrapped. The Army website still welcomes applicants from the Commonwealth.

We’re sorry to hear you’re having difficulties with your application. This sounds like a technical issue, since the Army website states that UK residency is not required to apply. We recommend that you get in touch with British Army directly and see if they can resolve this problem for you.

Best of luck in your application,
          The How2Become Team.

  10. Ruben says:

    Hello Jordan,
I am a Portuguese citizen but have been living in the UK for more than 5 years. I understand Portugal is not part of the common wealth countries but would I still be able to join the British army?
    Thank you

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Ruben,

By the sounds of it, you are definitely eligible to join the army, depending on your personal circumstances of course. However, you can increase your chances of success by applying for British Citizenship – as there are more allocated spaces for British citizens. Since you’ve been living in the UK for more than 5 years, you can apply for UK citizenship by naturalisation.

We hope this helps, best of luck.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

  11. Nkansah says:

Hi, I’m Charles Nkansah from Ghana. I’m very interested in joining the Army. Am I eligible to join? If yes, let me know when the recruitment starts with the Commonwealth countries.

    • Jacob Senior says:

      Hi Charles,

Since Ghana is a Commonwealth country, you are eligible to join the British Army. Recruitment is happening all the time, so our recommendation is that you start your application now.

      Good luck with your application!
      The How2Become Team.

  12. Obah-Ampong Christian says:

Hello thank you for your detailed explanation. I am Kojo, a Ghanaian. I understand I can join due to the fact that I come from a Commonwealth country.
I have a Bachelor of laws Degree from Ghana and a Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law from the University of London. What rank do I qualify to be enrolled in.
Also will I qualify to be a Professional Qualified Officer once I complete my legal education and become a barrister in the UK

    • Jacob Senior says:

      Hi Kojo,

As a foreign national, you will likely not be joining as an officer. We hope this helps!

      Thanks,
      The How2Become Team.

  13. Moeid says:

I lived in London, England for a total of 8 years ( not consecutively ), but I am a Belgian national and citizen and currently live in Belgium, would I be eligible for the British Military?

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Moeid,

The British Army does have spaces for foreign nationals – but these are relatively limited. Therefore (depending on your personal circumstances) you are likely eligible, but there will be more limited opportunities to join. It certainly does help if you can obtain British citizenship prior to application.

We hope this helps, and we wish you the best of luck.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Abdul,

That’s great news – Sierra Leone is in the commonwealth, so therefore you should be eligible to apply, depending your personal circumstances of course. In terms of when they’ll get back to you, it’s hard to say, as this is dependent on a) the success of your form and b) how many other applicants there are.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

  29. David says:

Hi, I am David and a Ghanaian citizen. I applied to join the army and have been successful at the initial stage. I am to do my final assessment in the Uk and have already applied for the visa. I was told to book a return ticket when coming over. Does that mean I will have to return to Ghana after my assessment even if I am successful?

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi David,

That’s fantastic news, it’s great to hear that you’re set to do the assessment. If you have a UK visa and indefinite leave to remain, then you shouldn’t need to return to Ghana, but this is very much dependent on your individual circumstances.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team.

          Sincerely,

          The How2Become Team

    • Philip Yeboah says:

  30. Boyd says:

    Hi Jordan.

I am 27 going on 28 in a few days time. I am from South Africa, have a wife and two children who are also South African, we are based in Scotland and have been here just over 1 year, we came over on an ancestral visa which gives us the right to live and work in the UK for 5 years.

I have tried applying for the Army and the RAF multiple times for both Full time and reserves but I keep getting rejected. However I have got a bad back but am willing to push through the basic training to seek a career. What could you advise could you give me?

    Regards
    Boyd

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Boyd,

We’re sorry to hear about your problems with your back. Is this something you are including in your application form, or are you getting to the medical stage and failing? If it’s the former, then it’s entirely possible that there are other reasons for the rejection, that aren’t down to your medical issues. Our advise is to contact your local armed forces careers office, to see if they can assist you further.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

      • Boyd says:

        Hi Jordan.

Thank you for your response, I have filled in two application forms already but get rejected at the application level. I do not state that I have a back condition because I am able to push through it, they recommend downloading a army fitness app which is meant to prepare you for the physical tests, I am able to push through most of the exercises they recommend.

I will do as you recommend and see if the careers office can assist further.

        Regards
        Boyd.

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Hector,

You would need to obtain British citizenship before applying – as Spain is not a member of the commonwealth. Once you’ve sorted that, you should be able to go onto the Army website and apply from there =].

      Sincerely,

  33. thiago says:

hi, iam Brazilian but have Italian citizenship and living in England 3 years so far however dam 38 years old, is there any chance going the army?

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Marcus,

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi there,

For passport related questions, we advise speaking with the army directly, as they should be able to assist further with specific visa-related matters.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

  99. Mensah Akwasi Vincent says:

Am Mensah Akwasi Vincent from Ghana.l’m 19yrs of age, may u give the permission to join the British Army, therefore I do not have any eligible information about it but am much interested in it of joining the army group. This is my number 0558684451. Thank You

  100. josh says:

hi im a papua new guinean. i not in the UK but i was wondering if i could still enter the army there…i do have a passport …how would in apply into the militry?

  101. KODI says:

As I have found in personal experience , you CANNOT even start the application process if you ARE NOT ACTUALLY inside the UK with a valid visa. That means you have to waste time and money on a visa, and visit the UK to attempt an application. God forbid if they reject you.

I am South African, INSIDE South Africa, attempting to join the UK Army, for several months.

1: You cannot start the application because you are are not inside the UK, you cannot get past eligibility check.

2: You cannot live-chat to any recruiters before selecting a job (which is not possible for reason #1)

3: Your attempts to get a recruiter via Facebook or via email will go ignored, or they will just redirect you back to the UK Army Website where you can’t even start to apply.

4: If you do manage to get a recruiter they will tell you the following:
    – Do not fill in online form
    – A special process is required for foreigners NOT residing in the UK
    – You Will be contacted
    – Wait to be contacted
    – Do not apply for a visa

5: You will never be contacted, and no matter how hard to try to contact someone, you will not get anyone who will help you.

So unless you are rich and can risk throwing away money at a Visa and a TWO-Way airline ticket just for a CHANCE to start the application process and MAYBE be accepted, you will have no chance to actually join.

    • Jordan Cooke says:

      Hi Kodi,

You are correct that you have to be within the UK in order to apply for a full time army role. The criteria for applying is listed on the Army’s recruitment webpage, which explains that applicants must take responsibility for ensuring that they have permission to be in the UK throughout the recruitment and selection process, as well as having a passport that is valid for 2 years once you’re accepted.

      Sincerely,

      The How2Become Team

  139. Robert J. Malcomson says:

I know this question is coming pretty late, as this article is now a year and a half old.

I’m an American (US) and I’ve wanted to join a military force for a long time, but given the current political climate of the US, it wouldn’t be ideal to join the USAF, out of fear that I may be deployed against my own countrymen.

I understand I’ll need to receive British citizenship prior to joining their military. My question here is how long does it normally take to receive citizenship in England? I’ve seen some varying answers, just hoping there will be a solid, no nonsense answer given here. If there’s no way to know for certain I’ll understand.

    • Gemma Butler says:

Hi Robert, thank you for your comment. Unfortunately we are not involved with the citizenship process for the UK so are unable to advise in regards to this. Apologies that we could not be of further assistance this time.

  148. Damian Diamante says:

Hello, I’m mostly on here because I would like to immigrate to the British Isles. I’m from the United States, and have looked into immigrating but it seems like it’s quite hard to do so(forgive me if I’m wrong, perhaps I haven’t done enough research). In the US, one of the ways immigrants can get their citizenship is by serving in the US military for a certain amount of time, and I was wondering if there was something similar in the United Kingdom? I apologize if that doesn’t relate to the contents of this website but I have yet to find an answer anywhere else.

    • Gemma Butler says:

Hi Damian, that’s an excellent question! At present, you must be a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen to be eligible to apply (though due to the volume of applicants commonwealth applications are currently on hold).

You may find some more relevant information here: https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration

  149. Luis Alonso Hernandez says:

Hello, my name is Luis I’m 23 years old I’m from Costa Rica, my country is not listed in the commonwealth, in this case what do I need to be eligible to join the British army?
I have my high school diploma, and I’m currently studying medicine.
Is there a way to have a sponsor, so it can be more eligible to join the army?

    • Gemma Butler says:

Hi Matthew, to meet the citizenship requirements to join the British Army you must be either a British, Irish, or Commonwealth citizen.

  150. EMMANUEL HAGAN says:

Hi, I’m Emmanuel from Ghana. I applied to join the British Army in 2016 but there was a delay in acquiring my travelling passport. So i think this led to my acount being deactivated. My question is in three folds here:
    I. Do i have to apply anew?
II. Is my application still under consideration?
III. Can my account be re-activated for me?

Thank you very much. Counting on your usual cooperation.

    • Gemma Butler says:

Hi Emmanuel, unfortunately we are not able to assist with this, you will need to contact the force you applied to or the recruitment office for clarification.

Unfortunately I know I’m not from a commonwealth country which sucks 🙁 but i don’t really have an idea on what to do from now on. I have applied for eligibility on the army website but apparently i need a sponsor which i have no idea what is and I’m not sure how to get a citizenship

    • Gemma Butler says:

Hi Orfeusz, I would recommend contacting your local AFCO for further guidance in this situation.

  152. Jokubas panavas says:

Hello I’m from Lithuania but I’ve been living in uk for 14 years if I would get my citizenship done would I be able to join

    • Andy Bosworth says:

To join the British Army you will generally need to be either British or from the commonwealth. If you are a foreign national you would not be able to apply unless you have dual nationality, with one of them being British.
